60th Birthday Venue Brisbane | The Workshop at Factory 51

Sixty is a milestone most people will tell you they never quite saw coming, and it deserves a night that matches it. Not the local bistro you could visit any Tuesday, and not a hotel function room with a cash bar and platters of spring rolls. A 60th done properly is one of the great celebrations a life produces, and The Workshop at Factory 51 in Coorparoo has hosted hundreds of them.

Why a 60th is a little different

By 60, most people know exactly who they want around them and what kind of night they actually want. The guest list tends to be curated rather than comprehensive, the speeches are more honest and more earned, and the evening usually runs longer and slower in the best way. What you need is the right room to hold that warmth: somewhere that fits 60 to 120 people and still feels special, food worth the occasion, enough privacy for the speeches to matter, and a team that works in the background so the celebration runs in the foreground.

The Workshop

The Workshop is our dedicated private function room, with its own entrance off a private laneway so guests arrive straight into the space, away from the main restaurant. Inside you’ll find exposed original brick, timber ceiling beams and polished concrete, a Maria Theresa crystal chandelier over the centre of the room, festoon lighting the length of the ceiling, and solid handmade timber tables. The jade green marble bar runs along one wall, fully stocked and staffed by a bartender just for your event, and the room has its own restrooms, sound system, wireless microphone, projector and dropdown screen. There’s no shared space with the restaurant and no noise from other tables, so the room is genuinely yours. It holds up to 156 seated or 180 cocktail-style, so a party of 120 feels full and festive while a group of 50 still feels intimate.

Italian shared feasting

Our function menus are built around Italian shared feasting, with food placed down the centre of the tables so guests serve themselves and each other. Depending on the package, the night might start with focaccia, antipasti and arancini, then move into shared mains like handmade pasta, house-made gnocchi, roast pork belly, slow-braised brisket, free-range chicken, lamb ragu, woodfired pizza and seasonal sides and salads. Passing food around does something individually plated meals can’t: it warms a room full of people who may not all know each other, well before the speeches begin. And because we’re a working Italian kitchen rather than a catering operation, the food is the kind guests actually remember.

Dietary needs across a mixed crowd

A 60th guest list usually spans a wide age range and a wide range of dietary needs. The shared feasting format makes that easy, since the kitchen can build vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options into the same spread so no one feels set apart. When you book, your function coordinator collects dietary details and passes them to the kitchen ahead of the night.

Making the speeches land

Sixty years produces stories, and the speeches are often the most moving part of the night. The Workshop supports them with a wireless microphone, PA speakers, projector and dropdown screen, so guests at the back can hear clearly and a photo montage is easy to include. Speeches tend to work best once everyone has settled into the meal: three or four speakers, kept short, with the final slot going to whoever knows the guest of honour best, and a little space left for them to respond.

Letting the guest of honour enjoy it

The one thing rarely planned for is the birthday person’s own experience of the night. Because The Workshop is a single private room with a natural flow, they don’t have to manage suppliers or chase the room. The bar sits at one end, dining runs through the centre, and speeches happen from a clear focal point, so the evening largely runs itself. The private laneway entrance also lets you choose between a coordinated arrival or a relaxed mingle from the start.

Planning your 60th

We host private functions seven days a week, lunch or dinner, so a 60th works just as well as an evening party or a relaxed daytime celebration. We work on a no venue hire fee model for most private functions: The Workshop is included when your event meets the food and beverage minimum spend, which varies by day, time and guest count. Once you have a rough guest number and a preferred date, your coordinator can walk you through the current options. Weekend dates book out early, particularly from October to December and March to May, so it’s worth securing a provisional date even before the details are locked in.

Personalising the room

The Workshop has plenty of character on its own, so there’s no blank space to fill, but personal touches layer beautifully over it: a photo display near the entrance or along the bar, a custom cake, table flowers, personalised menus, or a timeline of the guest of honour’s life. External florists, stylists and photographers are welcome with a little notice, and your coordinator can confirm the setup window once your booking is in place.

Location

We’re in Coorparoo, close to Brisbane’s inner east and southside, which makes it easy for guests coming from Camp Hill, Greenslopes, Holland Park, Norman Park, Woolloongabba, Morningside, Carina and Carindale, and still accessible from the CBD or northside without the night being buried in the city. There’s on-street parking on Holdsworth Street and nearby, Coorparoo train station is within walking distance, and rideshare can drop guests right at the door.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the best guest count for a 60th here?

The Workshop works across a wide range, but 50 to 100 guests suits a 60th especially well: substantial enough for a proper celebration, intimate enough for the speeches to land.

Can we bring special wine?

We have a full wine list and beverage options for functions, and BYO isn’t generally offered for function bookings. If there’s a particular wine or champagne you’d like to feature, talk to your coordinator about what’s possible.

Can the birthday person choose the dishes?

Our function menus are built around Italian shared feasting, and there’s usually some flexibility within that depending on the seasonal menu. Your coordinator can share the current menu and work through preferences and dietaries.

Can we bring a photographer?

Absolutely, just let your coordinator know in advance. The chandelier, festoon lighting, brick walls and dark timber tables give a photographer plenty to work with.
