Wake Venue Brisbane: A Private, Warm Space to Gather After a Funeral

by | May 22, 2026 | Memorial Services, Private Events

When families look for a wake venue in Brisbane, they’re usually after more than a function room. You need somewhere private, calm and easy to manage on a hard day, a place where family and friends can gather after the service to share stories, eat something, raise a glass and spend unhurried time together. At Factory 51 in Coorparoo, our private function room, The Workshop, offers exactly that: a warm, character-filled space with exposed brick, soft lighting and a private bar that feels personal rather than clinical.

A wake doesn’t need to be formal, but it should feel considered, with room to pause, talk and remember. Our team can help you put together a gathering that feels gentle and well organised, so you can focus on being present.

A respectful, private space

A wake is often the part of the day where people can finally breathe, the service has finished, respects have been paid, and everyone needs somewhere to gather with food, drinks and familiar faces. The Workshop is separate from the main restaurant, down a private laneway, so your gathering stays contained and dignified rather than exposed to the public. The exposed brick, polished concrete, green marble bar and soft lighting give the room character without feeling cold or flashy, special, but not fussy.

Flexible to suit your family

Every family does this differently. Some want a quiet lunch with immediate relatives; others a larger gathering with extended family, friends and community. Some include a few words and a photo slideshow; others keep it informal, with guests arriving, sharing food and talking naturally. The Workshop suits all of it, a seated lunch, a cocktail-style gathering, shared feasting or canapes, and functions run seven days a week, lunch or dinner, so we can match the timing to your service. The room holds up to 156 seated or 180 cocktail-style, but works just as well for a small group.

Food that comforts

Food matters at a wake. It gives people something to gather around and offers comfort when many haven’t eaten properly that day. We’re a restaurant first, so the food is genuine, generous Italian made for sharing, whether that’s canapes and grazing, shared platters or a proper long lunch. For some families simple and elegant is right; for others, when the person loved food and a full table, a long lunch feels more fitting. Either way, we’ll guide you to a menu that suits the time of day, the numbers and the tone, without making the planning harder.

Drinks, toasts and gentle service

Many wakes include tea and coffee, wine, beer and soft drinks, and often a toast to the person who’s passed. The Workshop’s private bar keeps drinks service natural and contained, and you can run a simple package, a bar tab or pay on consumption. A toast doesn’t need to be long, sometimes a few words from a family member and a shared drink is enough, and our staff will help the timing feel smooth.

Photos, speeches and personal touches

Small personal touches help guests remember someone properly: framed photos, a slideshow, a favourite song, a memory table, flowers, candles or a guest book. We can run a photo slideshow or tribute video through the room’s AV, which is helpful when families would rather show photos at the gathering than during the service. Speeches are welcome but don’t need to be structured, one or two short ones, or simply stories shared around the room. Our honest advice: a few thoughtful details usually work better than over-styling. Simple often feels right.

Close to the city, easy on the day

We’re in Coorparoo, easy to reach from the inner south and east, Camp Hill, Greenslopes, Holland Park, East Brisbane, Woolloongabba, Norman Park, Carina and Morningside, and close to the city without being a CBD venue. On a funeral day that often means travelling from a chapel, church, cemetery or crematorium, so an easy-to-find venue with nearby parking takes some of the pressure off, especially for older or grieving guests.

Wake, funeral reception or celebration of life?

Families use different words, a wake, a funeral reception, a memorial gathering, or a celebration of life, each with a slightly different feeling, and we can suit all of them. If your family is planning a broader farewell, our memorial service venue guide may also help, and for those on the southside specifically, our wake venue Brisbane southside page covers why Coorparoo can be a comforting choice.

Planning at short notice

Wakes are often arranged within days of confirming the service, which can feel overwhelming alongside everything else. You don’t need every detail worked out to enquire, just your preferred date, rough guest numbers, the service location and timing, and any food, drinks or access needs, and we’ll guide the next steps from there.
